The bucket hat is a a staple in the sun hat world, and with good reason. First worn by Irish farmers and fisherman around 1900, the classic bucket hat design is low maintenance, and high protection. Bucket hats have had something of a resurgence in recent years, and are popular with younger wearers heading out to music festivals, alongside those heading out for an outdoor adventure, and needing something ightweight and effective.
At Sunday Afternoons, we've been creating sun hats for over 30 years, and we still have a real soft spot for the humble bucket hat. Ours all come with the maximum sun protection rating of UPF 50+, and are designed to be lightweight and breathable.
Is a bucket hat good for the sun?
Yes. A bucket hat offers more protection than a simple cap because it also shades the neck and ears. For the most protection, choose a bucket hat with a wider brim, or go for a sun hat with a neck cape. And unlike some other wide brimmed sun hats, bucket hats (including ours) are generally easier to pack, as you can fold them up without harming their shape.
What does a UPF 50+ sun rating mean?
A UPF 50+ sun rating is the highest sun protection rating available. When a material is rated UPF 50+, it means only 1/50th or less of the sun's UV rays are able to pass through. So you can diminish the sun, but not the fun!
Should I still wear suncream if I'm wearing a bucket hat?
Yes, it's always best to combine suncream and a sun hat for maximum sun protection.
